I wouldn’t be satisfied if Adobe didn’t release a significant new version of Photoshop for five years, so I don’t see why I should be satisfied that the W3C hasn’t released a significant new version of their tools, either.
Now that’s just silly talk. Standards need to be updated if they don’t suffice anymore, not because consumers are hot for a new hip thing.
I know a few people — including myself — who could use a virtual haircut, if only because a real haircut would be useless… (You must use headphones.)

This is pretty interesting: Google Images can recognize if an image has a face in it. Not a documented feature (yet?), but if you hardcode ‘imgtype=face’ or ‘imgtype=news’ into a Google query, the results differ accordingly.

Dat auto’s slecht zijn wisten we natuurlijk al lang, maar waarom gaan we het nu pas geloven? Heeft het er iets mee te maken dat hybride-auto’s eindelijk een volwaardig alternatief aan het worden zijn?
Dit gebeurt er als je technologie, zoals automagische verklarende woordenlijst-links, gaat inzetten op plekken waar dat niet nodig is. Dan wordt een Californische man plotseling een netwerk dat een stad omspant.
“Eind juli begint Schiphol in de lounge een proef met een zogenoemd ‘docking station’. ... Reizigers kunnen er bijvoorbeeld op hun laptop of mp3-speler iPod muziek, televisieprogramma’s of toeristische informatie binnenhalen.”.
Alleen al het feit dat een regeringspartij zó een infantiel voorstel durfde te doen, had reden genoeg moeten zijn om het kabinet te laten vallen.
Zo op het eerste gezicht lijken de guidelines voor internetsites op mobiele telefoons behoorlijk overbodig, maar wellicht zet het zoden aan de dijk. Wat gebruik betreft loopt het mobiele web een paar jaar achter op het echte internet; er is weinig tot geen toegepaste content en de waardeloze inhoud die er wél is, kost een vermogen (per minuut).
De Volkskrant heeft onlangs hun site volledig gemoderniseerd, maar het lukt ze nog steeds niet om een linkje te maken.

Eye-tracking
Seth Godin heeft een eye-tracking analyse uit laten voeren met Squidoo.com als onderwerp, waarbij het pad dat de ogen van de bezoekers van de website wordt gevolgd en geanalyseerd.

Bekijk vooral eerst de video, en daarna Squidoo.com, dan begrijp je meteen waarom de leespatronen zo grillig zijn.
Naar mijn idee is dat omdat:
- De bezoekers geen geïnteresseerde bezoekers zijn maar test-personen.
- Nergens in de eerste oogopslag te lezen valt waar de site over gaat, waardoor bezoekers gaan panikeren.
Ik denk overigens niet dat dat per definitie slecht is.
Nu meer en meer MacBook vs. MacBook Pro benchmarks het daglicht zien, kun je je afvragen of de MacBook Pro niet nú al zijn beste tijd heeft gehad (en binnenkort al vervangen zal worden).

A fundamental change in how BUSINESS is done
I would like to elaborate on a little quote from Cringely that was posted on Slashdot today:
What counts is that for Microsoft the platform is the PC while for Google the platform is the Internet and nobody can hope to control the Internet—not Microsoft OR Google. Google is making a ton of money from people [small/medium sized businesses] who never were even in business before. This is not only a fundamental change in how advertising is done; it is a fundamental change in how BUSINESS is done.
I like to think of Google as a company that is in the business of gathering and exploiting information. The internet is a warm and fuzzy place for Google, since it is made up entirely of information. Harvest that information, wash, rinse, repeat and cross-reference the results, and you’ve got some shiny ‘new’ information that might be of interest to certain people. That is what Google does. And that is in no way a fundamental change in how business is done. Searching for a target market and creating a product and a business-model.
And i don’t see how Cringely can see Google as a rival to Microsoft.
BitTorrent in Mac OS X 10.5? Zou een goed idee zijn om grote videobestanden te distribueren in iTunes.
Google heeft SketchUp ingelijfd. SketchUp is een simpel 3D-schetsprogramma. Nieuw is de plug-in waarmee je je ontwerpen op de aardbol van Google Earth kunt plaatsen; een functie waarmee architecten hun (niet) gerealiseerde werken in de publieke ruimte kunnen plaatsen.
Spam loont: “as many as one in 20 recipients visit porno websites after receiving lewd come-ons by email”. En: “The sales to click-through ratio for pharmacy drugs is one to 150”.
Monome 40h is een fraai vormgegeven USB input-device dat erg handig lijkt voor live audio- en video-performances. Bekijk vooral de video om een beeld te krijgen van de mogelijkheden.
De eerste benchmarks druppelen binnen, MacFixit zette een MacBook Pro met Windows via Boot Camp tegenover een HP laptop met vrijwel dezelfde specificaties: “As you can see, the MacBook Pro held its own, even with the similarly equipped Hewlett-Packard laptop packing twice the RAM”. Voor een paar honderd euro meer heb je dus een designer-laptop die Windows én Mac OS X aankan.
En zo heeft Boot Camp er een geduchte concurrent bij. Benchmark resultaten zullen de doorslag moeten geven.
Boot Camp
Het duurde even voordat de gevolgen van de introductie van Boot Camp op een rijtje stonden:
1. Het voegt extra functionaliteit toe voor Mac-gebruikers; denk aan games, testen van webpagina’s door sitebouwers en de mogelijkheid om Windows-only programma’s te gebruiken.
2. Apple neemt het risico dat Mac-gebruikers switchen naar een Windows PC als hun Intel Mac aan vervanging toe is, vanwege de prijsverschillen tussen Mac en PC hardware. Als een Mac-gebruiker ontdekt dat hij meer tijd in Windows besteedt dan in Mac OS X, is de keuze – in de huidige markt – snel gemaakt.
3. Als het prijsverschil geminimaliseerd kan worden kan Apple een serieuze concurrent op de PC hardware-markt worden. Het is even wachten op benchmark-resultaten om hierover een echte uitspraak te kunnen doen.
4. Veel bedrijven en instellingen mogen slechts ‘Windows-compatible’ hardware aanschaffen, terwijl veel werknemers de mogelijkheid zouden willen hebben om in Mac OS X te kunnen werken. Een Trojan-horse effect.
5. Het is een stevige duw in de richting van Microsoft’s Virtual PC, hoewel het gemak om Windows als applicatie onder OS X te draaien niet geëvenaard wordt door Boot Camp.
6. Je zou kunnen speculeren dat de verkoop van Windows zal stijgen doordat meer Mac-gebruikers het aanschaffen. Misschien. Minimaal.
7. Het was hackers reeds gelukt om Windows op een Intel Mac te installeren. Dankzij Boot Camp houdt Apple deze ontwikkeling zelf in de hand.
8. “We think Boot Camp makes the Mac even more appealing to Windows users considering making the switch.” – Philip Shiller in het persbericht. En daar is het waarschijnlijk vooral om te doen. Een Intel Mac met OS X kán zonder problemen Windows draaien en dat is voor veel mensen interessant – vooral voor ‘hangende’ switchers – maar hoeveel mensen zullen uiteindelijk regelmatig gebruik maken van de mogelijkheid?
9. Alle Mac- , tech- en veel reguliere media besteden er aandacht aan, veelal ongenuanceerd. Die publiciteit heeft zijn voordelen: Apple’s aandeel steeg 8% na de aankondiging van Boot Camp.
“Macs use an ultra-modern industry standard technology called EFI to handle booting. Sadly, Windows XP, and even the upcoming Vista, are stuck in the 1980s with old-fashioned BIOS. But with Boot Camp, the Mac can operate smoothly in both centuries.” Auch.
Omroepen wentelen kosten af met BitTorrent. Een aardig verhaal van Herbert Blankesteijn, maar: via het BitTorrent model ontvang je data van meerdere verzenders tegelijk, cumulerend in een hoge instroom van data. Kun je met proxy-servers diezelfde snelheid halen?
There is a growing trend in which software companies and internet- and host providers provide filtering of your traffic as a means of service. That’s worrying, because that kind of filtering can only be done correctly at the user’s end and not in some centralized configuration.
Sony's UMD-bomb
It’s awful. Sales are near zilch. It’s another Sony bomb—like Blu-ray.
Hoewel het een moedige poging tot het introduceren van Personal Video was – wellicht met de intentie om het succes van de Walkman te evenaren – heeft UMD blijkbaar meer negatieve dan positieve effecten voor Sony’s positie in de markt. Het grootste gebrek van UMD lijkt binnenkort te kunnen worden opgelost:

Microsoft zal op 9 maart 30 seconden presentatie wijden aan het geheime – maar dankzij een suffe webprogrammeur gelekte – project origami. Even speculeren: kan het zijn dat Microsoft Apple de loef af wil steken omdat ze beiden bezig zijn met een volgende stap richting lifePod, in de vorm van een portable audio/videoplayer met palmtop functies? Dat wordt lachen.
Bestaat er eigenlijk een actiegroep tegen ongevraagde spamfiltering door je host-provider? Ik bepaal liever zelf wat ik junkmail vind…
